Solar panels installed on Thornhill Primary School roof

Introduction

Thornhill Primary School is a 468-pupil school located in Cardiff. The school comprises 15 classes, including a nursery, housed within a large modern building. With a relatively low budget per pupil compared to other schools in Cardiff, the leadership team sought ways to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs while maintaining a high-quality learning environment.

The Motivation

Thornhill Primary School recognised the importance of renewable energy early on and had already installed a solar photovoltaic (PV) system before engaging with Ineco Energy. While this system provided financial savings and reduced carbon emissions, its potential was not fully realised. The school leadership team sought to enhance their sustainability efforts by increasing efficiency and maximising energy savings through further improvements and additional equipment.

The Ineco Solution

Enhancing Existing Technology

Since Thornhill Primary School already had a solar PV system, Ineco Energy conducted a comprehensive site audit that factored in the energy being generated. The audit determined that the school could achieve an additional 52% reduction in electricity costs by expanding its solar energy system.

Installation of Additional Solar Panels

Ineco Energy proposed and installed an additional 148-panel solar PV system. This upgrade was projected to save the school nearly 39,000 kWh of grid energy annually, reducing the school’s carbon emissions by almost 10 tonnes each year, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.

Additional Roof Work for Longevity

During the site survey, Ineco Energy identified concerns with the existing condition of the slate roof. A roof integrated solar system was installed to ensure longevity and seamlessly blend into the roof.

The Benefits

Thornhill Primary School now enjoys cleaner, more affordable energy, with estimated annual savings of over £3,000 and lifetime savings of approximately £138,631. These savings free up valuable resources that can be reinvested into the school’s educational programmes.
