"At NFU Mutual, we take the environmental impact of our operations very seriously. Buildings are significant contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 40% in the UK. Therefore, ensuring energy efficiency across the built environment is crucial for reaching our net-zero target. We have been fortunate to benefit from Ineco’s extensive experience in designing and building safe, reliable solar installations. The performance of the solar system at our head office has exceeded our expectations, and we are already exploring opportunities to install additional projects in the near future.."

Facilities and ESG Manager, NFU Mutual

The Motivation

NFU Mutual has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Acknowledging the significant impact of buildings on global carbon emissions, accounting for around 40% of the UK’s total, the company has introduced a range of energy efficiency initiatives across its office sites in recent years. A major milestone in this journey was the decision to power its headquarters in Stratford-upon-Avon with clean energy, a move that reduces its carbon footprint and reinforces its commitment to long-term sustainability goals.

The Ineco Solution

Collaborative Development

Before works began, Ineco collaborated closely with NFU Mutual to secure necessary consents, grid, and planning permissions, and commission independent structural assessments. Detailed designs were developed to ensure best-in-class products were specified for the project.

Safety and Risk Mitigation

To mitigate fire risks, SolarEdge inverters and power optimisers were installed, featuring Safe DC, Arc fault detection, and automatic shutoff technology via a Fire Fighter Gateway. This integration ensures that in the event of a fire, the PV system is safely deactivated for emergency services.

High-Performance Solar Technology

The 249.20 kWp system comprises 560 bi-facial, dual-glass solar panels from JA Solar, mounted on the Van der Valk Valkpro+ L10 flat roof system, ensuring enhanced performance, safety, and longevity. These high-efficiency panels are expected to generate nearly 200,000 kWh annually, powering close to 20% of the building’s energy needs and saving 45 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Delivered safely, on time, and within budget, the project marks the start of a long-term partnership. With a 30+ year lifespan, Ineco will monitor and maintain the system to ensure continued safety and performance.

The Benefits

The new system will enable NFU Mutual to benefit from significant long-term financial savings and make substantial progress toward its net-zero commitment, reducing its environmental impact while setting an example of sustainable business practices. Generating clean, green energy on-site reduces reliance on the grid, providing greater energy independence and security for the headquarters.
The
advanced safety features incorporated into the system, provide peace of mind by mitigating fire and electrocution risks. Additionally, the use of high-performance, durable components ensures the system will continue to perform efficiently for over three decades.
