“The NEC is a perfect location that is not only geographically key, but of national significance, to support the EV charging landscape.  Our choice of suppliers and contractors in the creation of this site was key, as a flagship site, we required the best-in-class service on very tight project timelines. Working with Ineco has been exemplary.”

The Motivation

The NEC Gigahub™ is a landmark project at the heart of one of the UK’s busiest destinations, welcoming over seven million visitors annually and handling traffic volumes exceeding 60 million vehicles each year. Designed to be a major transport hub of the future, it marks a significant step in the UK’s journey toward low-carbon infrastructure.

To complement its extensive network of ultra-rapid EV chargers, the NEC sought a renewable energy solution that aligned with its long-term sustainability goals. The result: a solar carport that generates clean, on-site electricity to power EV charging while offering sheltered parking for visitors. This dual-purpose system not only enhances the user experience but also reduces reliance on grid energy and cuts the site’s operational carbon footprint. As a flagship installation, it sets a new benchmark for sustainable transport infrastructure across the UK.

The Ineco Solution

Ineco Energy partnered with the EV Network to deliver a cutting-edge solar carport at the NEC, combining innovative design with advanced renewable technologies. The system features bi-facial solar modules from LONGi, SolarEdge optimisers, and Bluetop solar parking structures with integrated LED lighting, maximising energy yield, safety, and functionality.

Together, these components bring the vision of the forecourt of the future into reality today, seamlessly integrating clean energy generation with a high-quality user experience.

The Benefits

The NEC solar carport provides clean, on-site electricity generation through bi-facial solar modules, the system reduces reliance on grid power, cuts carbon emissions, and supports the NEC’s wider sustainability objectives. The integration of SolarEdge technology enables real-time performance monitoring and enhanced safety, ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency.

The
carport structure also provides practical advantages—offering sheltered parking for EV users, improved lighting, and an enhanced visitor experience in all weather conditions. As one of the largest installations of its kind in the UK, the project positions the NEC as a leader in green infrastructure and serves as a scalable blueprint for sustainable transport hubs nationwide.
