The Walnuts School in Milton Keynes is a specialist community residential school and children’s home, providing education and care for 175 pupils from Foundation to Year 14. The school caters exclusively for children and young people on the autistic spectrum or those with social communication difficulties, ensuring a supportive and structured environment tailored to their needs.

The Motivation
Despite being a relatively new building, The Walnuts School faced significant challenges with its existing lighting system. Many of the fluorescent fittings were inefficient and no longer in production, making replacements difficult to source. Additionally, broken or inadequate lighting caused distress for pupils who are particularly sensitive to their environment. Recognising the need for a more efficient, sustainable, and sensitive lighting solution, the school sought an alternative that would enhance both learning and living conditions while also reducing maintenance costs and energy consumption.
The Ineco Solution
A Fully Funded LED Lighting Upgrade
Ineco Energy provided The Walnuts School with a fully funded LED lighting solution. The project was designed to improve the school’s learning and residential environment, reduce its carbon footprint, and lower operational costs. Given the school’s unique needs, including its 24/7 operation, a tailored lighting solution was essential.
Home Schooling
The walnuts is both a home and school for many of its pupils. Cooler colour temperature LEDs were installed in classrooms to enhance concentration and productivity, while warmer LEDs were used in bedrooms to promote relaxation and restful sleep. This strategic lighting design created a more comfortable and sensitive environment for pupils and staff alike.
Schools Out, Lightings On
The installation was carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff. LED lighting was fitted in school buildings outside of core school hours to avoid interfering with lessons, while residential areas were upgraded during the daytime when students were in class. This thoughtful approach ensured a smooth transition to the new lighting system without causing distress to the pupils.
